“BRAD ALLEN BIETRY!

YOU BETTER START PRACTICING, OR I’M NOT PAYING FOR ANYMORE LESSONS!”

Are you frustrated because your kids don’t practice the amount of time you think they should be practicing?   Have you told them they have to practice before they can watch TV?  Have you threatened to take away their phone from them until they practice?  Told them they couldn’t go out with friends until they practiced for an hour?
I have five things that can help the frustrated parent:

1.  Always remember that learning music takes years and years of practice, dedication, and a passion.  It’s better to practice everyday for a little bit, than not at all.  It’s also a good idea to have a goal to perform something such as a recital, concert, or just a private family concert.  Music and songs they love to play is also a good motivator.
2.  Consider taking your kids to a professional concert to see an artist that plays their instrument for inspiration.  I remember going to a see a Tina Turner Concert, and I couldn’t stop practicing after the concert.  Her piano player was awesome.
3.  Set an environment that is conducive to practicing that is quiet and free of noise.  Just like studying for a school test, practicing an instrument is best done in a quiet room free of distraction for maximum concentration.
4.  Ask them to prepare a private concert for you on a certain night after dinner to hear what they are working on them.  When I was a kid, my parents would let me perform a concert for large  family gatherings and would pay me a small amount of money for the concert ($20).  I practiced my heart out to give a good show!
5.  Give them positive encouragement when they play a piece well.  When they are having trouble with something, encourage them to slow it down and work out the tough parts.
