10/8/2010 On style or design issues, try to provide a picture of special designs to your framer; it will work better than the plans. Art niches, stairs, plant shelves, arches, door shapes, etc. A pictures is worth a thousand words.

9/10/2010 Septic systems are private waste disposal systems. They have several in ground components and are usually designed by engineers and installed by excavators. They last many years, and require minimal maintenance.

7/26/2010 Lets say the ADDITIONAL cost of high efficiency heating and super high quality insulation is about $7500 during construction. On a 30 year mortgage at today's interest rates - that's about $39 added to the monthly payment. If heating and cooling bills are 30% less (pretty realistic estimate), you tell me if that is a good investment.
7/5/2010 If your budget allows it, you should consider solid wood, or solid core doors. Both are superior to hollow core doors and are without the associated problems like easy to puncture or poor sound controlling qualities.

6/14/2010 Consider extra sound proofing (insulation) around bathrooms, under stairs, between master bedrooms and the rest of the house, Once you move in, it is too late to go back and fix it.
5/12/10 Think ahead when it comes to plumbing. Put in what you need right now but have the plumber install tees with nipples and caps for future gas grill and/or fire pit.

5/7/10 Do you know what the most important energy component is in your home? Windows. You will regret buying cheap windows just to save a few bucks upfront and end up with higher energy bills later.
4/25/10 Whether you are acting as your own general contractor or you have hired a builder, building a house is not a passive activity. You must make lots and lots of decisions and when you are slow or unwilling to decide, your builder or subcontractor may make that decision for you. Then the house becomes their vision and not yours.
3/31/10 Did you know that 11 degrees off of due South is the ideal orientation for greatest solar gain at our latitude.
