A note from abroad:
Expected to communicate before now,but Charles' company chose the weekend we left to make a major switchover and his "devices" haven't been working right. He has been spending "quality time with the Help Desk," which many of you can, I'm sure, appreciate!
Had a bit of a mix up the morning we left, and took a slightly later flight, which wasn't bad, except we got middle seats on the long flight. Arrived at Rome hotel about 11:00 and went directly out into the day. Our hotel was really a tiny apartment near Campo de Fiori, where a "heretic," in the opinion of the church, was martyred. We ate breakfast with the guy every morning-I think I would have liked him. There was a market in that piazza each day, mixing products, fruits and vegetables, and junk to buy. As many of you can imagine, I wanted to find akitchen! You'll see a couple of photos of vegetables when I get back.
We tromped around Rome, seeing the expected places, but opted not to go to the Vatican. I was there about 1987 with Dad, and C likes crowds just about as much as I do, and I left that up to him. (Insert political and moral discussion here.) Since school had started, there weren't many families, but Rome was full enough of oblivious humans. As in India, you can't have expectations or be in a hurry. We did go to an exhibit of working models from Leonardo's notebooks, which was fascinating.
Monday, in a Hertz Fiat, we took off for Montepulciano, a hill town in Tuscany. Started out calling the lady in GPS Guida, but switched to Beatrice, because she seemed intent on leading us indirectly to Hell. Scenery was breathtaking-vineyards, olive groves, cornfields, hay bales-lush and green like Colorado! Arrived in a downpour, but found a lovely hotel inside the city walls, and believe me, a parking space is a miracle. Went on a two-stop vineyard tour on Tuesday, and purchased some at both places. The son at Il Greppo who led us about was wearing a Planet Hollywood Cancun teeshirt and shorts. He was right- Chilean wine might seem like a deal, but it is all done in a laboratory, not from natural processes and nature.
Went from there to Montalcino (where Rachael Ray honeymooned) and walked around. Got to Siena, and to the giant piazza, which looks like one of our ski bowls, but stone(they have horse races in there, which must be like roller derby), and were overwhelmed with the heat and crowds, so we left and went on to Volterra, another hill town. Stayed in a Rick Steves' suggested hotel, where you fold out the shower enclosure and the whole room IS the shower. They had a pool, but sundown was near, and the Help Desk was sounding a Siren call.
Thursday was on toward Pisa. Hoping to see the ocean, we went west. We couldn't find a hotel in Pisa, so we wandered around Pisa's port city, Tirennia, and found a place that not only had a beach, but an Olympic-size pool. I was happy in the Adriatic for a couple of hours, and there was a pretty nice, modern seafood restaurant nearby. Friday we got to Pisa pretty early under overcast skies and sprinkles. Very touristy! Went into the musems, church and baptistery, but didn't stand in line for the tower. Again, I'd been, and the visibility was poor. We resisted taking the picture of one of us holding up the tower, but it appeared we were the ONLY ones who did.
Made it into Florence by late afternoon Friday, to a "business hotel" chosen by THE COMPANY. They limit the AC to MAYBE 70-72 degrees in the rooms, and it doesn't cool off until the wee hours. Did I mention humidity, yet? . . . way beyond what we are used to. It's a two-shower-a-day vacation, but moisturizer isn't a problem. Should have brought a pedometer, we've put lots of miles on these feet! The Ufizzi museum was too crowded, but we went to the Pitti Palace, which has the second largest collection in Florence, and it was plenty. Unlike U.S. museums, there is no logic or reason how art is displayed, so it really runs together, fast. We visited the Gallileo museum of science and inventions (thanks for the suggestion, Jeff) and could have stayed hours but for the hunger. It really gave an insight into how driven G and his fellow early scientists really were. Sheffield--I took a photo of the bronze plaque "commemorating" the burning of Savonarola in your honor-that was a great book to read coming to Florence-Thanks!
Monday was the first day of the Society of Petroleum Engineers conference, so I am ON MY OWN. I know you are wondering about the culinary aspect of the trip, but let me get to that later. Sorry I haven't written sooner!!
