Bicycle Frames: Which Material Is Better
By admin on Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 | No Comments
When it comes to bike frames, the cost vary depending on the type of material it is made of. There are basically 5 types of materials used for bike frames and I will discuss each one of them briefly below:
* High Tensile Steel has the lowest price compared to other materials. It is a durable alloy but it has a high carbon content so it is not as stiff as other materials and hence, more are required to make a bicycle frame stiff enough. Hence, frames made of high tensile steel are heavy although it is quite inexpensive. You can find this material in beginners mountain bikes, and city and trail bikes.
* Chromoly Steel better known as steel alloy. It major additives are chromium and molybdenum. This material is very durable and refined and you can find frames made of steel alloy in bikes which cost around $400 on the low end to $1500 and above on the high end.
* Aluminum the stiffest and the most cost effective among bike frame materials. Usually used by dual suspension bikes, this frame is very light and stiff. Aluminum has also been refined in the same way as chromoly.
* Titanium an alloy and usually mixed with small amounts of vanadium and aluminum. It is expensive because it takes longer to weld the tubes to the frame. Titanium is also more compliant than chromoly and offers better fatigue and corrosion properties.
* Carbon fiber more affordable and perhaps more popular than titanium. Some of the nicest bike frames on the market are made of carbon carbon fiber. The bike manufacturer Giant is one of the leaders in carbon fiber frame making and the first to build a frame that came in at under 1 kilogram and at an affordable price.
So there you go. These bike frame materials are all durable and will last for years as long as you take good care of your bike. Which material is best for you depends on your biking style and where you bike.
