On May 26, Boxelder Creek Nurseries, LLC was hit in its entirety by hailstorms three times in one day. As is the usual practice in Colorado, Boxelder Creek notified the Colorado Department of Agriculture to insure that their plants were still saleable. The Department of Agriculture inspected the nursery and issued a Stop Sale on their entire inventory, as it was, according to Colorado Statute in a dead or dying condition.
Boxelder Creek Nurseries then asked Dr. Klett from the horticulture department at CSU to come to the nursery and to insure that the decision of the State Ag Department was the correct one. Dr. Klett inspected the nursery and again two days later issued a letter that agreed with the State decision.
The nursery at Boxelder Creek is now closed. Since adequate hail insurance will not be available in the foreseeable future, the property will revert to its farm status and no longer be a nursery in the future.
There were some shrubs that were in protected houses at the nursery that were undamaged, and those are currently being inventoried and will be available for sale at the Green Acres Nursery location. Many of the members of the staff at Boxelder have now moved to the Green Acres Nursery location and all protected nursery stock remaining at Boxelder will be transferred to that location. Additionally, Green Acres, with the help of the Boxelder staff will continue to fulfill standing orders, all deliveries and pick-up of plant materials can be done through Green Acres Nursery located at 9010 S. Santa Fe Dr., Littleton, CO 80125. You can reach Green Acres at (303) 791-3420 or via fax (303) 470-0733. Green Acres web site can be accessed through the following link:
The owners and staff want to assure their customers that they will do their best to fulfill their needs. The accounting department, including accounts receivable and accounts payable, has been moved to Green Acres and will be handled at that location. Mail has been forwarded, so accounts receivable payments will be processed promptly and all accounts payable will be paid in full on a timely basis.
This was truly a disaster and truly a sad event for the owners and staff of Boxelder Creek Nurseries. It is sad to see such a loss to such a beautiful nursery. This loss is truly a sad event for our entire industry.
