Every day, Waste Management is at work in communities across the country, providing essential services to more than 21 million commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers. We currently operate in 49 states, the Distict of Columbia, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and 14 foreign countries. With 650 collection operations, 330 transfer stations, and 304 landfills, we have become the largest provider of waste management services in the world.
But more important than our size is our focus. Through the years, we have held fast to the fundamental values which have guided our growth from the beginning. We have worked diligently to build relationships based on trust, service, and commitment. We have kept those relationships strong through hard work, dedication, and integrity. One of our primary strengths is the depth of operational experience in our management team. From the corporate headquarters to the field, we have recruited and retained the most qualified individuals in the industry. All have a mindset of achievement that carries forward to the field.
Our strong, decentralized management structure is divided into five geographic areas. Under the direction of seasoned area vice presidents -- with over 100 years of collective experience in collection -- our managers oversee the local aspects of daily field operations with the support of a lean corporate management team
We have also developed effective methods for identifying and implementing system-wide processes that have helped us become a low-cost provider of quality services in each of our markets. Waste Management operates in the majority of all major markets in North America and substantially more than any other waste service provider. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we are constantly looking for operating efficiencies and seeking partnerships in new markets that make sound business sense for everyone involved.
